Maroon 5's New Album: V

One of my favorite bands, Maroon 5, released a new album yesterday! It is their fifth album, and is appropriately titled "V" (as in the Roman numeral for "five"). If you don't feel like heading to the store to buy the CD, you can listen to the album on Spotify: Maroon 5 – V – Spotify or purchase it on iTunes: Maroon 5 – V – iTunes.

The first two singles are also on Youtube:

Review:
This is the most "pop" sounding album that Maroon 5 has made so far. As a result, many of the songs have the same sound as all the other songs on Top 40 radio: extremely catchy, yet very formulaic. Adam Levine's vocal range also has no limit in this album (just listen to "Feelings")... up to you to decide whether that's a good thing. ;) However, there are still some hidden gems in the album; for example, "It Was Always You" brings back an 80's vibe and shows off Adam's range without too much of his "oohs" and "ahhs".
All in all, this album is not Maroon 5's best. The songs are catchy, but have no real sustenance, and the spotlight seems too focused on Adam Levine rather than the entire band. Rating: 3 stars out of 5.

Review: Sara Bareilles - Little Black Dress Tour - San Diego (8/9/2014)

On Saturday night, Sara Bareilles stopped at the SDSU Open Air Theatre in San Diego as part of her Little Black Dress Tour. And I was lucky enough to go see her for the first time ever! Here is what I experienced on that amazing night:

The Brave t-shirt that I bought
I arrived at the venue around 7 pm, and since I had some time to kill, I went to check out the tour merchandise. The selection was pretty diverse, and included a variety of shirts, posters, and accessories. I decided to buy a t-shirt with Brave lyrics on the front (for $30, which is pricey but typical for tour merch). I also happened to encounter an old friend of mine, and we chatted for some time before I went to find my seat. As I waited for the show to begin, I noticed there were lots of people in the crowd wearing little black dresses. I regretted not wearing my little black dress to the show, so I put on my newly purchased Brave t-shirt to feel a bit more relevant. :)

View of the stage from my seat: Section AAA, Row 4, Seat 9
At exactly 7:30, Sara walked onto the stage in an ordinary t-shirt and jeans, with her hair tied up in a bun. She introduced her opening act, Emily King, and gave a short speech about her "girl crush" on Emily. Emily then strolled happily onto the stage, and sang four or five of her songs. She had a cool R&B vibe and gave a good opening performance, even though it wasn't the type of music I really enjoy.

Emily King, the opening act for the show
Emily's performance ended around 8:15, and it wasn't until 8:45 when the lights dimmed down and Sara's band members began to take their places on the stage one-by-one. Last to set foot on the stage was Sara, and the audience stood up and cheered as she sat down at her piano. The opening notes of "Little Black Dress" rang out loud and clear, and soon enough, we were all dancing and singing along. After that, Sara immediately moved on to the next song: "I Wanna Be Like Me," a groovy bonus track from the iTunes download of The Blessed Unrest.

Sara then talked briefly about her "s**t day" because her bus broke down for the millionth time. But of course, she still successfully made it to San Diego! Next, after singing "Love on the Rocks" and "Love Song" from her Little Voice album, she took a break to read a bunch of signs that her fans were holding up. One person wanted Sara to sing for her niece's eleventh birthday, and Sara agreed to dedicate the next song to her. (The little girl was so embarrassed!) Someone else wanted to take a selfie with Sara as a birthday present, and it actually happened! Then, Sara asked for the birthday people in the audience to raise their hands, and she told them, "You know what this means? All of your parents had sex." The crowd almost died from laughter.

Sara Bareilles playing "Love on the Rocks" on the piano
Sara then took on a more serious tone and talked about the period of depression that she experienced, which inspired her to write the next song she was going to sing: "Hercules". The hauntingly beautiful and emotional "la la" s that she sang after the bridge made this the best performance of the night. After that, she picked up an electric guitar and played a stripped down version of "Come Round Soon" - another one of my favorite live performances.

Next she played "Manhattan", a melancholy ballad inspired by her transition from L.A. to New York City a few years ago. By the end of the song, there was no dry eye in the audience; even Sara herself seemed to have been holding back tears. But then, Sara surprised everyone with a completely new song! The song is called "She Used To Be Mine", and is written for an upcoming Broadway musical called Waitress. In fact, Sara told us about how she was selected to compose all of the songs in this musical! I can't wait to hear more about it.

Sara playing her ukelele and singing "Chandelier"
Sara then gave us another surprise by bringing out her ukulele and singing an acoustic cover of Sia's "Chandelier". It was a beautiful rendition that showcased her powerful voice as she belted out the chorus almost effortlessly. This was followed by a wistful performance of "Gravity", the first ballad Sara ever wrote, which brought the audience to tears once again. However, everyone cheered up when Sara joked that the song was "written for a douche bag", and started playing a more upbeat number: "Gonna Get Over You", which she says she wrote for "a different douche bag".

Then, Sara shared a story of how a friend of hers, while running past a cemetery, noticed that the New York City skyscrapers looked like tombstones from a distance. This was the inspiration for the next song that Sara performed: "Chasing The Sun". After that, Sara took a short break to tell the audience how much she loved San Diego, and then she began to sing her newest single: "I Choose You". She told us that she wrote this because a guy wanted a non-depressing Sara Bareilles song to sing to his girlfriend.

Sara and her band performing "Chasing The Sun"
Following this, Sara sang "King of Anything", during which she introduced her band: Rich Hinman (guitar), Misty Boyce (keyboards), Cara Fox (cello), Christina Courtin (violin), Steve Goold (drums), and Chris Morrissey (bass). And, as with tradition, she also got the crowd to sing in rhythm with the "oh oh thing" in the middle of the song; half of the audience sang the first part of the "oh oh", and the other half sang the second "oh oh".

Then, Sara told the crowd that she was going to sing one more song, while winking very obviously to indicate that it wasn't actually the last song (since there's always an encore). The song was her latest hit "Brave," and the audience loved it. Scenes from the Brave fan video (made by a bunch of SaraBfans) played in the background as everyone sang along.

The song ended and Sara walked off the stage, but after a minute of frantic screaming, cheering, and clapping from the crowd, she returned for the encore. After prompting the crowd to "f**king shut up," Sara sang a beautifully poignant a capella version of "Bright Lights and Cityscapes," accompanied by her three backup singers. The night ended with "Satellite Call," complete with a rotating disco ball that reflected ethereal beams of light across the entire venue, reminding everyone that they are "all just perfect little satellites." It was a sad but captivating way to wrap up the show.

Emily King and her bandmates gathering near the tour bus
After exiting the venue, I waited with about fifty other fans near the tour bus parking area for a chance to meet Sara. There was a chef preparing hamburgers for the performers, and I saw Emily King and her band members come out to eat. A few other band members came out to play with a frisbee. But there was still no sight of Sara. I waited until midnight, which was when the security guards notified the fans that Sara had already left the venue. (Later, I found out from fans on Twitter that she left because of an emergency. This could also explain why she sang only 17 songs instead of the usual 18. I hope everything was alright!) I was bummed, but I was also grateful that I was able to attend the show in the first place. Meeting Sara would have been the absolute best thing in the world, but having seen Sara perform less than 100 feet away from me was already a dream come true!

All the videos of Sara's performances can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_QQU38PVKwlZO2-E63jqgEc7V4K2yRYW Enjoy!

Song of The Week: Hercules

Song of the Week: "Hercules" by Sara Bareilles

This song is one of the last songs that Sara wrote before leaving Los Angeles and moving to NYC. As Sara herself describes it: "I love singing this song and I like talking about it because it feels like it's a part of the healing, of sort of embracing what is dark, and when we are in pain, to believe that there is a better place waiting for you."

Song of The Week: Maps

Song of the Week: "Maps" by Maroon 5

This is Maroon 5's newest single, which will be on their upcoming album V (pronounced five). The song's style is more pop-oriented, and different than the band's old stuff. I prefer M5's old style, but this song is really catchy and I can't get it out of my head. And all the radio stations are playing it; I hear it almost everyday!

Lyrics:

It's a Girl!

Congratulations to Kelly Clarkson and her new baby girl, River Rose Blackstock! River Rose was born on June 12, 2014, and is Kelly's first child. So far, Kelly has only shared one picture of her new daughter, which can be seen below.
So cute! Best wishes for Kelly, Brandon, and River!

Random Thoughts: Reasons Why Sara Bareilles and Adam Levine Should Totally Get Together

Sara Bareilles and Adam Levine? I ship it.

P.S. Adam's currently engaged married to Behati Prinsloo, so this post is obviously not intended to be serious. Maybe in an alternate universe, Adam and Sara could be together. :P

1. They are close friends.

Sara met Adam when she was in college at UCLA, and the two have been in touch ever since then. They tweet each other, help each other, joke around together... and are just great friends!

2. They both started their musical careers around the same time.

Sara knew Adam back in the day when his band was called Kara's Flowers instead of Maroon 5. They even competed against each other in the annual student concert UCLA Spring Sing in 2000. (Sara beat them.)

3. They've toured together... multiple times!

Top 10: Sara Bareilles Songs

Here is a list of what I think are the ten best songs by Sara Bareilles!

10. "City" - Little Voice

A sad song about feeling lost, unwanted, and alone. Even more of a tearjerker when you can actually relate to it.

9. "Love Song" - Little Voice

This is the song that rocketed Sara into fame. What I enjoy the most about this song is the ironic story behind the lyrics: Sara's record label was pressuring her to make hit "radio-friendly" love songs, but rejected most of her submissions. Out of frustration, Sara came up with this song that cleverly showed her label that she can totally make a hit song about anything - including not wanting to write a love song!

8. "Gonna Get Over You" - Kaleidoscope Heart

This song is probably the catchiest out of all of Sara's songs. It makes me want to dance whenever I'm feeling down. Plus, the music video for this song is hilarious!

Song of The Week: "End of The World"

Song of The Week: "End of The World" by Ingrid Michaelson

Live version (even better!):

Another song from Ingrid Michaelson, this one comes from her previous album Human Again. The first time I listened to it, I nearly bawled. It might have been because of the musical key that the song is in, or the impactful lyrics, or Ingrid's delicate voice (or all three!). But there is no doubt that this song is filled with emotion.
The only problem I have with this song is that, on the album version, the autotune/mixing makes Ingrid sound like a young teenager as she's singing the chorus; there's little to no depth/subtlety in her voice (if that makes sense... I'm not sure how to describe it). Which is why think her live version is a million times better.
Fun fact: Ingrid was inspired to write this song after watching a zombie movie. :)

Happy Birthday Kelly Clarkson!

Yesterday (April 24) was Kelly Clarkson's birthday! She's turning 32 years old! (It doesn't look like it, right?) ;) That also means it's been 12 years since she won the first season of American Idol and began her career in music. (Wow, that makes me feel old!)

Check out Kelly's first American Idol audition:
To this day, she still has her amazing pipes and her cute, spontaneous, dorky personality. I hope she continues to make music and inspire the world, and I wish her the best for the future!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KELLY CLARKSON!!!

Song of The Week: "Time Machine"

Song of The Week: "Time Machine" by Ingrid Michaelson

"Time Machine" is a super catchy song from Ingrid Michaelson's newest album Lights Out. I came across this song on Spotify one day and its opening piano beat instantly caught my attention. Although I haven't listened to many of Ingrid's older songs, I can tell that she's taking on a different style (compare this to "Be OK" and "The Way I Am"). I like this sassy, rocker side of her; this song is definitely going on replay for a while. :)

New Kelly Clarkson Song! (It's a duet!)

Hey everyone! Sorry I haven't posted in a while... I was traveling and got sick and was busy with work and other stuff. But everything's back to normal now!

Now for some great news! Kelly Clarkson just came out with a new song called "In The Basement"! Well, it's actually a duet with country singer Martina McBride and is a part of Martina’s independently released Everlasting LP. Also, the song is originally by Etta James, an American Blues artist. Listen to the duet below!

It seems like Kelly is trying out a different sound. I really like the raspy and breathy quality of her voice in this song. Here's a test for all the fans out there: can you tell the difference between Kelly's singing and Martina's singing? :)

Song of The Week: "Manhattan"

Song of The Week: "Manhattan" by Sara Bareilles

Sara Bareilles is a master when it comes to sad songs. This beautiful piano-based ballad, from her newest album The Blessed Unrest, is about leaving a loved one behind in order to move on. The song is simple, but don't underestimate its power to convey emotion; it's a perfect example of the saying "less is more."

Random Thoughts: Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Lawrence are Twinsies

Jennifer Lawrence is the "Kelly Clarkson" of the acting world. (Or, if you prefer, Kelly Clarkson is the "Jennifer Lawrence" of the music world.) Here's why:

1.) Both are extremely talented at what they do.

Kelly Clarkson is an amazing singer who won the first season of American Idol, sold over 20 million albums worldwide, and received numerous awards for her music, including 3 Grammys. Jennifer Lawrence is a fantastic actress famous for her roles in The Hunger Games, Silver Linings Playbook, and American Hustle, and she's won many awards as well, including 2 Golden Globes and an Oscar.

2.) They both started pursuing their future at a young age.

Clarkson singing in her high school talent show
Lawrence acting in The Bill Engvall Show in 2007
Kelly began singing in seventh grade by joining the school choir. Jennifer acted in a local theater and decided to pursue an acting career by the age of 14.

3.) They have a similar sense of humor.

This is best explained through a series of GIFs:
Food Lovers

Master Photobombers

 Professional Funny-face Makers

Spontaneous Dancers

4.) Both have had embarrassing mishaps at awards shows.

Kelly got stuck to Miranda Lambert at the 2013 Grammy Awards. Jennifer Lawrence tripped during the 2013 Oscars.

5.) Both of them are happy with who they are.

Neither of them are bothered by petty critics. YOU GO GIRLS!

As you can see, Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Lawrence are basically the same. :D

Song of The Week: "Say Something"

Song of The Week: "Say Something" (A Great Big World cover) by Grey

The female singer in this cover is Grey, who competed in Season 5 of the U.S. singing competition show The Voice. She was eliminated from the show after her live performance of Paramore's "Still Into You", which was unfortunate because her previous performances were so good! (I blame the bad song choice; Grey's voice isn't the type for a rock song.) Anyways, the video above is Grey's cover of "Say Something" by A Great Big World. I'm sure if she sang this on The Voice, she could've stayed in the competition - and maybe even could've won. (In my opinion, she's like Cassadee Pope - winner of season 3 - with a more mature voice.) She just has a soft, unique tone in her voice that is able to bring people to tears with the right song. I hope she continues to make music, because I'm waiting to hear more from her!

Song of The Week: "Part II"

Song of The Week: "Part II" by Paramore

Many people consider this song as the second part to "Let The Flames Begin," a song from Paramore's 2007 album Riot!  Indeed, the rhythm and lyrics are similar (i.e. "oh glory"). But what I love about this song is when the guitar part comes in during the chorus. Combined with Hayley Williams' amazing vocals, the hook will be stuck in your head all day (or all week, in my case!) And need I mention the outro? It's pretty awesome.

Song of The Week: "City"

Song of The Week: "City" by Sara Bareilles

The amazingly emotional live version:

"City" is a song based on Sara's experiences when she moved from her small hometown in Northern California to the bustling city of Los Angeles. I can relate to this song very well, since I basically went through the same thing. In a such a populated place such as L.A., you can easily feel lost, unexceptional, or uncared for, since it seems like you're just another ordinary face in the crowd. Sara does another superb job communicating her emotions through her voice and her lyrics; I always feel like crying whenever I hear this song (especially when I listen to the live version).

New Sara Bareilles Single!

Hey everyone! Check out Sara Bareilles' new single from her album The Blessed Unrest (which I think totally should've won a Grammy!) It's called "I Choose You" - a sweet, happy song about finding the perfect person to love. Also great for serenading your significant other on Valentine's Day. ;)

And here's an awesome live performance of the song:

"I Choose You" also counts as the Song of The Week. :)

Song of The Week: "Enchanted"

Song of The Week: "Enchanted" by Taylor Swift

This "enchanting" song comes off of Taylor Swift's 2010 album Speak Now (which, in my opinion, is her best album). It's a pretty ballad that tells a story about a girl who's wondering whether a guy loves her. Taylor's voice is perfect for this style of song. I wish she'd continue making songs like these instead of all the pop stuff she's singing now.

Song of The Week: "Ain't It Fun"

Song of The Week: "Ain't It Fun" by Paramore

This song is the latest single from the band's self-titled album Paramore. The funk and soul influences in this song make it very upbeat and catchy - an ironic contrast to the song's sarcastic and mocking lyrics. Overall, it has a unique sound that's different than the typical pop/rock jams that are played on the radio.

**UPDATE: They just came out with the music video for this song! (Watch it above.) It features the most world records broken in a music video. That's pretty cool.

Top 10: Kelly Clarkson Songs

Here is a list of what I think are the best Kelly Clarkson songs (so far)! I will probably post a longer list, ranking all of her released songs, some time later in the year.

10. "I Want You" - All I Ever Wanted

Two words: SO CATCHY.

9. "Catch My Breath" - Greatest Hits: Chapter One

An upbeat song with meaningful lyrics that shows off Kelly's amazing vocal range!

Reasons That Sara Bareilles Should Win A Grammy (Or Two!)

Sara Bareilles is nominated for a Grammy in two categories this year!

Album Of The Year
"The Blessed Unrest" — Sara Bareilles
"Random Access Memories" — Daft Punk
"Good Kid, M.A.A.D City" — Kendrick Lamar
"The Heist" — Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
"Red" — Taylor Swift

Best Pop Solo Performance
"Brave" — Sara Bareilles
"Royals" — Lorde
"When I Was Your Man" — Bruno Mars
"Roar" — Katy Perry
"Mirrors" — Justin Timberlake

Sara should totally win a Grammy this year! She's a talented songwriter, singer, and musician, and her songs (especially "Brave") contain empowering positive messages. There are so many more reasons why she deserves the Grammy this year, so check out the article below (written by another Sara Bareilles fan, not me):

Song of The Week: "Come Round Soon"

Song of the Week: "Come Round Soon" by Sara Bareilles

Live version:
This bluesy song comes off of Sara Bareilles' first album, Little Voice. It is presumed to be written about how Sara was expecting her father to return to her family after a divorce. The song reveals her vulnerable side, but also has some bits of sassiness (such as the second verse). And, the high note after the bridge is just amazing (especially in the live version!)

Song of The Week: "Winter Dreams"

Song of the Week: "Winter Dreams (Brandon's Song)" by Kelly Clarkson

Sure, Christmas may be over, but that doesn't mean we can't keep listening to Christmas songs! "Winter Dreams," off of Kelly Clarkson's Christmas album Wrapped In Red, seems more like a love song than a holiday song, which makes it great to listen to even when 'tis not the season! Kelly wrote this song for Brandon Blackstock, the love of her life with whom she recently married... And if the lyrics reflect her real-life relationship with Brandon, then this story-in-a-song is one of the sweetest I've ever heard.

Lyrics:
